As the summer travel season concludes in Western countries, Singaporean travellers are beginning to plan for mid-autumn escapes, with a notable interest in intra-Asia destinations. According to the Expedia Fall Travel Outlook, there has been a 15% increase in flight searches for cities such as Tokyo, Bangkok, and Seoul compared to the same period last year.

The report also highlights a significant decrease in average ticket prices for Chinese destinations like Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou, with a drop of 20% or more compared to the summer season. According to Expedia’s data, this price reduction presents an opportunity for travellers looking to take advantage of the shoulder season, where lower airfares and reduced crowds make for an appealing travel experience.

Expedia’s data further reveals that the week of 15 October offers the most affordable travel rates, with international ticket prices nearly SGD 100 cheaper than during the peak summer months. For those planning trips to Thailand, Korea, Malaysia, or Japan, booking before 30 August could result in savings of up to 25% or more.

Lavinia Rajaram, a travel expert for Expedia Group Brands in Asia, emphasised the advantages of autumn travel: “The fall season is one of the best times to travel as the weather cools, seasons change, and travel expenses reduce. Regardless of the destination, many Singaporeans who want to view the fall foliage should take this opportunity to book a getaway when prices are the lowest during the low-peak travel season.”

The top destinations for Singaporean travellers this autumn include Tokyo, Bangkok, and Seoul, with Chinese cities like Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou also seeing increased interest due to lower prices and lighter crowds. The busiest travel period is expected to be the week of 19 November, just before the December school holidays, while the lightest is anticipated during the week of 24 September, coinciding with national examinations.
