Finding the perfect balance between preserving nature and heritage while also providing a contemporary experience to visitors is a delicate approach – one that 1-Flowerhill has been doing over at Sentosa Island in Singapore. Chris Millar, Senior Director of International Business Development for 1-Group in Singapore, recently spoke with WiT about maintaining that balance at 1-Flowerhill, the latest addition to 1-Group’s portfolio.

Nestled at the crossroads of Sentosa’s heritage and nature trails, the building that hosts 1-Flowerhill was first discovered by 1-Group in 2016, although, as Millar says, the venue then looked vastly different from what it is today. Yet, even then, Millar and his team were struck by its potential. “We could see the grandeur, the romance of the location, the beauty of the building,” he recalls.

One of the key principles guiding the design of 1-Flowerhill was maintaining a deep respect for the natural environment and the site’s historical significance, Millar explains, noting that sustainability and conservation were key considerations during development. At the same time, the venue retains a contemporary, modern style that seamlessly integrates with its lush surroundings.

The challenge, according to Millar, was balancing 1-Flowerhill’s vintage charm with modern touches. “You really don’t want to do too much,” he says. The goal was to preserve the property’s original feel while also creating what Millar describes as a “floral wonderland.” By adhering to strict conservation guidelines and enhancing the floral theme, the venue strikes a balance between historical authenticity and modern vibrancy. “It’s about ensuring everything works well together in terms of vibrancy and location.”

At the heart of 1-Flowerhill’s appeal is its culinary offerings. The venue features two key dining concepts: Wildseed and Camille, each catering to different tastes and experiences. Wildseed, a popular brand in Singapore that first launched at The Summerhouse in Seletar in 2016, offers a family-friendly, garden-themed dining experience.

Says Millar, “the menu at Wildseed reflects the flavors of the archipelago”, giving guests the opportunity to savor authentic Singaporean cuisine. “The environment evolves as you go through the day,” Millar explained, transitioning from a café atmosphere to a vibrant evening hotspot, with a more laid-back bar and grill, with live music and a view of the Singapore Straits.

Meanwhile, Camille, located on the second floor, offers an intimate dining experience with a unique French Japanese fusion menu. “We felt that was quite unique and special for Sentosa,” says Millar, highlighting the restaurant’s focus on romance, exceptional flavors, and its connection to 1-Flowerhill’s overall floral concept.

“There’s something for everybody,” Millar asserts. From morning to evening, seven days a week, 1-Flowerhill offers a diverse array of experiences, making it a popular destination for weddings, corporate events, and casual gatherings.

“We really set the place up to be the most beautiful destination in Sentosa, if not Singapore, for weddings,” adds Millar, noting that the venue has already become a favorite among couples looking to celebrate their special day in a picturesque setting.

The guest demographics at 1-Flowerhill are as diverse as the venue itself. Millar explains that the venue caters to both local Singaporeans and expatriates, as well as international visitors. “It’s quite a divide really,” he notes, explaining that weekends tend to attract more locals, while weekdays see more tourists exploring the island. To ensure broad appeal, 1-Flowerhill collaborates closely with Sentosa’s island partners, such as hotels and attractions, and works with organisations like the Sentosa Development Corporation and the Singapore Tourism Board.

One of the standout offerings at 1-Flowerhill is its focus on local Singaporean cuisine, with a signature touch, highlighted by a collaboration with Singaporean chef Damian D’Silva, a champion of Singapore heritage cuisine. For Wildseed’s high tea, the venue worked with D’Silva’s restaurant, Rempapa, to showcase traditional Singaporean flavors.

As Chris Millar aptly sums it up, “You are in this stunning conservation setting… all the peacocks that Sentosa is famous for wandering around,” painting a picture of a truly unique dining experience.

“It’s about creating a destination that’s beautiful, vibrant, and welcoming for everyone.”
