It’s travel over shopping for the young, wild and free

The majority of young travellers are ready to forgo a year of travelling to go shopping, according to the latest ZUJI-dex travel report.

According to the OTA, the report “ goes inside the minds of Singapore-based grad and post-grad travellers, uncovering their likes, dislikes, similarities and taboos.”

Themed “Young, Wild and Free”, 328 Singapore-based travellers participated in the poll; 164 were aged between 18-24 (grads), and 164 aged 25-34 (post-grads).

    80% voted to give up shopping, with grads making up 38% and post-grads 42%.
  • Given a free holiday worth S$5,000, grads will opt for an adventure trip with more than twice their number wanting to risk their lives sky diving and bungee jumping, while their post-grad counterparts prefer to play it safe with a total chill out holiday (13%).
  • Grad travellers will do anything for independence, with 22% willing to pay for a hostel or budget hotel room rather than stay with family and friends (5%).
  • 30% of post-grads will not skimp on comfortable surroundings, staying in only in 4+ star accommodation.
  • 20% of grads are willing to try new experiences on their travels, while a quarter of post-grads are more interested in the destination’s cultures and customs.

    Finding romance is one common factor among  all grads when on holidays, with with almost 20% hoping to have one.
  • When it comes to spending money for a 3-4 day getaway, 49% of all respondents listed the sum of S$500.
  • 89% of respondents will prefer to  visit a nudist beach than kiss a stranger or sleep on a park bench after a night on the town.
  • ·Grads are savvier travellers with almost twice their number checking out OTAs and travel review sites for tips and prices, compared to post-grads.
  • Almost half (47%) of grads and post-grads book their trip one month in advance, while about 10% leave all bookings to one week before departing.

Based on ZUJI booking data from October to December 2014, the top destinations among grads included Sydney for skydiving, and Bangkok for mountain biking or rafting. The destinations for romance were Paris, Seoul and London,

The data also revealed increased bookings for less-visited destinations including Macau, Phu Quoc and Sapporo.

Chua Hui Wan, CEO for ZUJI Singapore, said: “While the younger grad travellers tend to be more adventurous with their choices regarding accommodation and the type of holidays they opt for, they are similar to their older counterparts with both groups seeking an authentic and personal travel experience.”
